Following Brexit, the UK commits to the 2022 safety regulations including speed limiters.
Anyone who has driven a car with road sign recognition will already have experienced the technology being built into new cars in expectation of yesterday’s announcements. Fully automatic speed limiting looks like it will be mandatory from 2022 to comply with the new EU regulations.
Road safety charity Brake have already labelled it as a breakthrough and the AA have given their support but have stated that they need to see the details.
The EU have a target of zero road deaths and 2022 is one of their first steps to achieve this. On-board cameras and radar are already fitted to many cars with assisted braking completing this safety system. Adding speed limitation will improve in-town pedestrian safety further still
