The VW Carrado was described by Auto Express magazine as “one of VWs best-ever driver’s cars”. Made between 1988 and 1995 the hatchback coupe still looks modern as if it had been released in the present day, the popular Top Gear programme referred to it in 2003 as “a classic waiting in the wings”.
Performance matches the slick, understated design. The magazine ‘Car’ picked the Carrado as part of its “25 cars you must drive before you die”. The Carrado was well renowned for its impressive handling upon release. A quirky design feature is the rear spoiler which automatically rises when the car reaches 45-60 mph.
When buying a second hand Carrado it is highly likely that you will be buying it from a VW fanatic; The Carrado has a fan base of people who really care about the VW brand and in particular the Carrado. The previous owner may well have taken the car to Volkswagens UK festival ‘G.T.I international’ which having witnessed first-hand myself I can honestly say that the Carrado drivers are the most fanatical I’ve ever met. If you ever see a Carrado pass you on the road the chances are it will be in good condition and well loved.
The fact that you don’t see many of these cars anymore is an appealing aspect towards buying a Carrado- it will still make you stand out from the crowd.
